Physorg.com -- Part of the headache of having to constantly recharge batteries is not just how often they need to be charged, but also the time it takes to charge them. In a new study, researchers have proposed a charging method that could greatly reduce the charging time of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in everything from electronic devices to electric vehicles. The new method uses an additional oscillating electric field (besides the charging field) that should be capable of charging a lithium-ion battery in a fraction of the time compared with traditional methods......

Pun intended - it is all about economics. It is in the best interest of our overseas suppliers to keep selling us their oil as cheaply as they can. If gasoline prices "skyrocket" to the seven bucks or so a gallon that The Chosen One wants, and cap and trade sends the polluting industries overseas, then the higher cost of rapidly charged batteries may become practical to anyone left that might be able to afford them.

NakedDriver Champion Author Des Moines Posts:10,117 Points:1,487,790 Joined:Oct 2004	Message Posted: Mar 13, 2010 7:24:03 PM Ignore NakedDriver Report Abuse ə did any of you read the full story with the comments, plus the piece written by the peole who came up with the idea? first of all, i would question the safety of applying a 25ghz field without proper shielding. this is roughly ten times the frequency of a microwave oven! certainly it will serve to heat the battery, and would likely fry the skin of anyone who happened to contact it. and while heating the battery is beneficial (ask anyone who ha brought their car battery inside when it is zero f or -18°c so it can warm up and thus be easier to charge), _over_heating it shortens its life considerably. (one of the comments to the original article discusses this.) so, unless they have some way of isolating this energy, and limiting the effect on battery heating, i feel that this may be another great idea which is not practical. as for lead-acid batteries using this technique, i doubt if it would work. i do remember reading about the concept of “burping” a battery while it is charging so as to release the hydrogen molecules which build up on the lead plates, but don't know if the method was ever implemented or how it was supposed to operate. ə [Edited by: NakedDriver at 3/13/2010 7:25:36 PM EST]

Better is working on affordable battery designs that are in service. The efficiency of the recharge is an unanswered question. How much energy is needed for the oscillator? Once it works acceptably and can be used on bigger cells in cars, will the infrastructure allow such a fast recharge>
